The Lake Leelanau Lake Association is seeking a part time Freshwater Biologist. We need someone who loves Lake Leelanau and has a strong lake ecology background to conduct and manage water quality efforts. This is a part-time, hourly, contract position (perfect for either a science teacher or retired biologist) requiring a minimum of 200 – 300 hours per year.
Minimum Job Skills/Requirements: B.S. and/or M.S. in Biological or Ecological Sciences. Knowledge of freshwater ecology. Must have access to a reliable boat and motor. Good people, team, and writing skills. Computer literate in analytical, word processing, and presentation software.
Job Duties: Attend board and annual meetings, Kids Fishing Day, and other LLLA sponsored activities. Prepare monthly activity reports for board meetings and newsletters. Maintain subscription services and manage data for swimmer’s itch reporting. Coordinate swimmer’s itch activities with all stakeholders and prepare necessary regulatory applications and reports. Oversee and manage all water quality sampling efforts, summarize and report data as appropriate. Cooperate with the Leelanau Conservancy in water quality efforts. Hire and supervise technicians for water quality projects, as requested by the Board.
Highly Desirable Traits: Familiarity with Lake Leelanau and ability to access it by boat. Knowledge of MDEQ and MDNR wetland regulatory processes and knowledge of Michigan’s MiWaters database. Knowledge of swimmer’s itch. Past supervisory experience.
