We would like to celebrate the success of our departing biologist, Ron Reimink, who led the groundbreaking project to control Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) in Lake Leelanau. Ron’s innovative tools, techniques, energy, and enthusiasm have resulted in a lake free of large, uncontrolled EWM infestation areas. Our program is shifting to a maintenance phase, focusing on routine upkeep of existing sites now that major infestations are under control. His work for the lake will begin a new chapter as he transitions into a role to help publish scientific articles on the success of non-chemical EWM control methods.
This achievement is a testament to Ron's exceptional leadership, creativity, and commitment to our organization's mission. We're grateful for the expertise Ron brought to this project, which has laid a strong foundation for a healthy and thriving Lake Leelanau for future generations. His contributions will continue to influence our work.
As we move forward, we're pleased to welcome Elizabeth Haber as our new full-time Stewardship Coordinator and EWM Project Manager. Elizabeth will join LLLA’s Director of Administration and Programs and Dive Team Leader, Annalise Povolo, and the returning seasonal crew as they continue to build on the momentum Ron helped create. Elizabeth’s role is to ensure the team’s success in controlling invasive species is maintained, as well as taking LLLA forward with new initiatives in restoring native plant systems and organizing and developing stream sampling and additional water quality monitoring programs. Elizabeth has a master’s degree in botany and plant biology from the University of Michigan. We look forward to seeing the positive impact Elizabeth will have on our organization. This transition is a strategic step in our journey to protect and preserve our beloved lake.
We'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ron for his outstanding work and wish him all the best in his new role.
